How does a fuel cell vehicle work?
The fuel cell utilizes the same technology developed for our hybrid
synergy drive systems but the gasoline engine is replaced with a
fuel cell stack.
In a fuel cell, hydrogen gas combined with oxygen to create a chemical reaction that produces electricity, which is then used to power an electric motor and charge a battery.
Just as with a Toyota Prius, the power control unit in the fuel cell decides when the vehicle should be powered by fuel cell stack and when it should be powered by the battery.

When will the public be able to purchase a fuel cell vehicle from Toyota
and how much will it cost?
The fuel cell will come to market in 2015. No specific pricing has
been set at this time, but it will be available and accessible to
the public. Specific U.S. sales volume will be announced closer to
launch but it will be a significant number.
